Just had a perm? With the right aftercare your curls will stay bouncy, frizz-free and long-lasting. MILK HAIR Hamilton shares the essential do’s and don’ts to protect your new look.
The DO’s of Perm Aftercare
- Wait 48 hours before washing your hair — this lets the curl set.
- Use sulfate-free, curl-friendly shampoo & conditioner.
- Apply a hydrating curl cream or leave-in to retain moisture.
- Sleep on a silk or satin pillowcase to reduce friction and frizz.
- Book a trim 2 weeks after your perm to keep ends healthy.
The DON’Ts of Perm Aftercare
- Don’t wash your hair for the first 48 hours.
- Avoid hot tools and saunas during the first week.
- Don’t tie or clip hair tightly — avoid tension on newly formed curls.
- Never brush dry curls — detangle only when wet with conditioner.
- Avoid swimming in chlorine or salt water for at least one week.
- Do not apply chemical colour, bleach or keratin treatments within 7 days.
Weekly & Ongoing Care
- Wash 1–2 times per week with a gentle cleanser.
- Use a deep-conditioning mask weekly or as needed.
- Refresh curls between washes with a curl refresher spray or a small mist of water + leave-in.
- Minimise heat and always use a heat protectant for styling tools.
