Hair Type & Texture Guide for Perms

Understanding your hair’s pattern and texture helps us pick the right perm technique and products for reliable results.

Curl Pattern (Andre Walker System)

  • Type 1 — Straight: 1A (very fine), 1B (medium), 1C (coarse)
  • Type 2 — Wavy: 2A (loose), 2B (defined), 2C (coarse waves)
  • Type 3 — Curly: 3A (loose spirals), 3B (ringlets), 3C (corkscrews)
  • Type 4 — Coily / Kinky: 4A (S-coils), 4B (Z-angles), 4C (tight kinks)

Hair Texture (Strand Thickness)

  • Fine: delicate strands; lightweight products recommended.
  • Medium: most common; versatile for perming.
  • Coarse: thicker diameter; needs more moisture and strength.

Other Important Factors

  • Density: how many hairs per square inch (low/medium/high).
  • Porosity: how well hair absorbs and retains moisture (low/normal/high).
  • Previous chemical history: colour, bleach, relaxers or previous perms affect processing.

How This Affects Your Perm

Your stylist uses this information to decide: perm solution strength, rod size, wrap technique and whether pre-repair treatments are needed. If you’re unsure about your hair type, book a consultation so we can assess and recommend the best perm.
