How to Style Curls After a Perm

Styling permed hair is easier than you think. Use the right techniques and products to keep curls defined, hydrated and full of life.

Key Styling Techniques

  • Raking — use your fingers to distribute product evenly from root to tip.
  • Praying Hands — flatten product between palms and smooth down the hair to seal the cuticle and reduce frizz.
  • Scrunching — cup the ends and scrunch upwards to encourage curl clumping.
  • Squish to Condish — while conditioning, cup water + conditioner and squeeze to lock in moisture.
  • Brush Styling — use a curl-friendly brush (eg. Denman) on wet hair for ribbon-like definition.

Step-by-Step Styling Routine (Example)

  1. Shampoo with a gentle, sulfate-free cleanser.
  2. Condition and detangle while wet.
  3. Apply curl cream to soaking-wet hair using raking or praying-hands method.
  4. Apply a light gel or mousse for hold — scrunch upwards.
  5. Air dry or diffuse on low heat. Finish with a small amount of oil on ends for shine.

Refresh Between Washes

To revive curls: mist hair lightly with water + leave-in, scrunch gently and reapply a small amount of curl cream or refresher spray. Avoid adding too much product — build in small amounts.
